The 3rd Annual Howick 5 mile Trail run presented perfect, dry conditions for the race and the number of entries for 2014 was the highest to date so a big thank you to you all for your support. The course was altered slightly to allow for some unexpected grounds maintenance in the Howick Hall Gardens so the official course distance was recorded by Garmin as 4.76 miles rather than the advertised 5 miles.
Again we would like to thank Lord and Lady Howick for allowing us to run the race in their stunning grounds, it is a truly unique setting. We'd also like to thank all of the volunteers who helped organise this event. W Company Cadets, the volunteer caterers, race marshals and everyone who gave up their free time and worked so hard to make this charity event possible. We raised £842 via the race for W Company of Northumbria Army Cadet Force and thanks to the amazing support from Louise Donaldson and the Barclays fund matching scheme our final total raised will be £1684 - a fantastic achievement!
We had massive support from Alnwick Harriers this year which we very much appreciate. Some of the feedback we have received regarding the course was very positive, with everyone loving the views, setting and wildlife encountered.
As with any public event in its infancy we had a few minor issues this year from which we have taken feedback and will improve next year. We were unfortunately let down with the supply of electronic orienteering tags so had to record times manually. This also had a knock on effect on the Children’s 1 mile fun run which instead of having a rolling start between 10am and 11.30am as advertised on the website, was given a fixed start time during the adult’s race and also a change of route from the previous year. We'd like to apologise to anyone who this affected and for the lack of clear communication of the changes. We hope that we went some way to remedy the situation by running a second race and that the children still had fun. The number of children who entered the fun run increased by 26 entrants this year which is great and took us all by surprise.
We hope very much to see you again at the 2015 Howick 5 mile trail Run and please feel free to send us any feedback that will help us be even more successful next year.
